Hurricane Katrina was the most catastrophic storm in Entergy’s history. Severe damage to infrastructure meant that more than 75 percent of our customers were without power as Entergy crews along with thousands of mutual-assistance workers from throughout the country worked around the clock to repair equipment and restore service. It became important for customers to understand the unprecedented challenges facing our crews and that Entergy was doing everything in its power to restore service safely. We managed expectations via regular media updates, news conferences, employee communications, and a series of advertisements to inform customers that “The storm is not over” and much work was left to be done to put Entergy’s electrical infrastructure back together again. We worked with Public Service Commission members and public officials to help bolster our message. Crisis Communications for Hurricane Katrina won a 2006 Silver Anvil Award from the Public Relations Society of America.
