Power On! was an employee-driven initiative introducing a transformational business strategy that improved customer experiences by more than 75 percent in two years. Past business plans were criticized for being too corporate-driven and enacted with little employee input. Power On! was conceptualized as a way to build support and ownership from the ground up by inviting employees to develop the plan, which featured six focus areas — from safety and health to operational excellence — aimed at delivering exceptional service via an improved dialogue with customers. Power On! was unveiled in a series of live meetings and video conferences led by real employees telling real stories. Regular progress updates in print and video format spotlighted similar success stories told by employees. By the end of the initiative, the company had either met or exceeded Power On! goals and had an effective and adaptable business-plan template for future initiatives.
